The Thing is that japan is kinda different from europe or USA, reading manga there isnt bad seen as it is in usa or europe.
reading a manga is like reading a book so it's pretty normal actually.
Plus japanese are usually on the hardcore part of stuff, if they like drifting they gonna go drift all evening, read manga, magazine and watch VO or
DT etc..
And yes Initial D is pretty well know amongst jp racer/drifter.

this is not HD but it's from the same event.. u can see motsu (the one who do the rap in m.o.v.e.) playing initial D the arcade game..
